Acupuncture For Effective Pain Management And Relief

The use of acupuncture for pain relief is gaining acceptance in the U.S. So many people with pain, whether from cancer, headache, or a chronic, unexplained condition, rely on medications, such as morphine, which can become addicting.
Acupuncture has no side effects, and other studies have shown the pain relief it provides can last for months.

Inserting needles into key acupuncture points in the body stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These endorphins, cortisol, ACTH will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Some of these substances are 50 to 100 times more potent at pain relief than many prescription drugs.

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, 1.4 percent of respondents (an estimated 3.1 million Americans) said they had used acupuncture in the past year. A special analysis of acupuncture data from an earlier NHIS found that pain or musculoskeletal complaints accounted for 7 of the top 10 conditions for which people use acupuncture. Back pain was the most common, followed by joint pain, neck pain, severe headache/migraine, and recurring pain.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and promoting physical and emotional well-being.
